Matthew Mitcham Back In The Flesh

We just can't get enough of Mitcham. He is truly a hero in the eyes of many, gay and stright. Never have I seen a better form. The Advocate has a great articale with even better pics(grrrrr!). I can not believe he does not have a sponsor yet. What the hell is wrong with the world? Not only is he gorgeous but he has accomplished what no other human has done. Just in case you can't remember. He received the highest olympic diving score in history....thats right in history. maybe he needs to smoke on a bong for people to notice him.

NBA's John Amaechi Comes Out

I am happy for Amaechi for being open and honest. what I do not understand is, why do all athletes wait until after their career to come out? I know they are afraid of losing their job or even worse, but we all are. We need an athlete to come out while they are still playing. Rats off to ya Amaechi! wish you would have done it 3 years earlier.

In a groundbreaking revelation that began to reverberate around the NBA on Wednesday, former player John Amaechi has become the first professional basketball player to openly identify himself as gay.

Amaechi, who played at Penn State and spent five seasons in the NBA with Orlando, Utah and Cleveland, comes out in an upcoming book entitled "Man in the Middle" to be released later this month by ESPN Books (owned by the Walt Disney Company, parent company of ESPN).


Martina Navratilova, perhaps the most famous openly gay athlete in the world, praised Amaechi's decision and said it's imperative for athletes to come out because of what she called an epidemic of suicides among young lesbians and gays.

"It's hugely important for the kids so they don't feel alone in the world. We're role models. We're adults, and we know we're not alone but kids don't know that," she said. "He will definitely help a lot of kids growing up to feel better about themselves."

Three years after his playing career ended, Amaechi become the sixth professional male athlete from one of the four major American sports (NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL) to publicly discuss his homosexuality.

"What John did is amazing," said Tuaolo, who came out in 2002. "He does not know how many lives he's saved by speaking the truth."

Tuaolo said coming out would be a relief to Amaechi.

"Living with all that stress and that depression, all you deal with as a closeted person, when you come out you really truly free yourself,'' Tuaolo said. "When I came out, it felt like I was getting out of prison."

I dont mean to make this less than what it is. I feel, though, if he would have came out when he was still with the NBA he could have saved many more lives. I am proud that he came out, but it is like a 35 year old man with 2 kids coming out, its to late.

They Turned Our Gay Hero Straight

Alas, the Transporter is gay no more.

In the trailer for “Transporter 3,” Jason Statham (in character as the tactiturn commando-turned-courier Frank Martin) is very clearly seen making out with sexy costar Natalya Rudakova –- a stunning development for anyone intimately acquainted with the car-chase-crazy, karate-tastic French-financed action franchise.

In 2005, Louis Leterrier, the director of “Transporter 2” (and also credited as "artistic director" of the first “Transporter”) told me he created a gay subtext for the character so as to avoid making a “Steven Seagal kind of movie.”

"If you watch the movie and you know he's gay, it becomes so much more fun," Leterrier said then. "It's so great -- the first gay action movie hero!” He continued: “Action fans in general are pretty homophobic. You see these tough guys who say, ' "The Transporter," that's such a great movie!’ If they only knew they're really cheering for a new kind of action hero.”

And to drive his point home, he mentioned a scene in “Transporter 2” in which a drug czar's wife, played by Amber Valletta, makes romantic overtures toward the Transporter. Martin rebuffs her, explaining, "It's because of who I am."

Letterrier's take on that? “That's him coming out!”

At the time, Jason Statham, who plays the Transporter, dismissed the director's claims.

“It’s just Lou-Lou trying to be funny,” Statham said, using his private nickname for Leterrier. “Although he did say, ‘In Part 2, you will become the gay icon.’”

Well that would have been great for the gay community. We need something or someone like that to show the rest of the world that we are just like you. Lets take a moment and thank the asshole that made the 3rd Transporter.

Matthew Mitcham Wins 2008 Sports Performer Of The Year

Beijing Olympics diving gold medallist Matthew Mitcham has upstaged a star-studded field to win the 2008 Sports Performer of the Year award in Melbourne tonight.

Mitcham's heroics in scoring a record-breaking result on his final dive to claim individual gold in the men's 10m platform event was enough to win the award, organised by The Age and Sydney Morning Herald and announced at a gala function at Crown Casino.

Mitcham scored an incredible four perfect 10s, to steal the gold from favoured Chinese diver Luxin Zhou. It was a massive upset, snatching gold in front of a fiercely patriotic Chinese home crowd.

The young diver will snare $50,000 from the awards' sponsor, Colonial First State.

His story is a remarkable tale of overcoming difficulties. Matthew battled depression and retired in his teenage years after physical and emotional burn-out. But just nine months after resuming training he achieved the ultimate in his chosen sport.

He is also believed to be the first Australian to openly declare his homosexuality before competing at an Olympic Games.

Only Ten Openly Gay Olympic Athletes

There are only ten openly gay competitors in the Beijing 2008 olympics, but that is more than we could ask for. I want to say thank you to all that stand up and say "Here".

Of the 10,708 athletes who will march into Beijing’s Bird’s Nest Olympic stadium on Friday, Outsports is aware of only 10 who are publicly gay, on par with the 2004 Games. There is also a bisexual American softball player.

Of the 10 publicly gay Olympians this year, only one is a man: Matthew Mitcham (Australia, diving). Mitcham stunned the diving world by winning the gold medal Aug. 23 in the 10-meter platform.

The out lesbians are: Judith Arndt (Germany, cycling), Imke Duplitzer (Germany, fencing), Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg (Norway, handball and a lesbian couple), Natasha Kai (U.S., soccer), Lauren Lappin (U.S., softball); Victoria "Vickan" Svensson (Sweden, soccer); Rennae Stubbs (Australia, tennis) and Linda Bresonik (Germany, soccer).

Simple math illustrates the likely range of gay athletes in Beijing, using the 10,708 total participants. If 10% were gay, this would mean 1,070 athletes. Even the extremely low range of 1% would leave 107 gay athletes. Researchers such as Eric Anderson of the University of Bath in England (and a longtime Outsports contributor) say that the percentage of gays in sports mirrors the percentage in the entire population (estimated at between 2% and 10%).

Openly Gay Olympic Diver Wins Gold

From gay icon, to Olympic champion, Australian, Matthew Mitcham has won his first gold medal. He is the only openly gay male athlete competing in Beijing. There are 9 lesbians and one bisexual woman competing alongside him.

In the last moment he snatched the gold from China's Zhou Luxin, achieving earning four perfect 10s on his last dive, a back two-and-a-half somersault with two-and-a-half twist and a difficulty of 3.8 earning him four perfect tens and a total of 112 from that dive alone. He finished with 537.95 points

British Prime minister, Gordon Brown was among the spectators, primarily to watch 14-year-old Tom Daley who came in seventh place.

Mr Daley said: "It was an unbelievable finish from Mitcham. To get all those 10s, that is probably the highest score I have ever seen in one dive."
